Rescue Diver
"Challenging and rewarding" best describes the PADI Rescue Diver course. This course expands your knowledge and experience level: Rescue Divers learn to look beyond their buddy and consider the safety and well being of fellow divers. Although this course is challenging, it is a rewarding way to build your confidence. Rescue Diver training prepares you to prevent problems and if necessary, manage dive emergencies. The course is designed to be demanding, though realistic in its conduct, content and approach. Although the nature and content of rescue training is serious, many divers say this is the most valuable course they have ever taken.
Before earning the Rescue Diver certification, you must have completed:
- CPR training
- First aid training
The training must have been completed within the last 24 months.
Acceptable courses include:
- PADI Emergency First Response Primary & Secondary Care
- Or equivalent CPR/first aid training from another organization

Who is eligible to take the course?
To enroll in the PADI Rescue Diver course, a diver must meet these prerequisites:
Minimum Age
- 12 years old for Junior Rescue Diver
- 15 years old for full Rescue Diver certification
Required Certifications
You must already hold one of the following:
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver
OR - A qualifying certification from another recognized training organization
Emergency First Response / CPR Requirement
Before earning the Rescue Diver certification, you must have completed:
- CPR training
- First aid training
The training must have been completed within the last 24 months.

- PADI Emergency First Response Primary & Secondary Care
- Or equivalent CPR/first aid training from another organization
Medical Requirements
- Complete a Diver Medical form
- If required based on answers, obtain physician approval before participating
Water Skills & Course Expectations
During the course, students should be comfortable with:
- Self-rescue skills
- Underwater navigation
- Problem recognition
- Assisting tired or panicked divers
- Surfacing and managing unresponsive divers
- Search patterns
- Emergency management scenarios
The course is heavily scenario-based and is often considered one of the most rewarding and confidence-building recreational scuba courses.
