Why Your Next Dive Trip Should Be with Your Local Dive Shop
You’ve got the certification. You’ve got the gear. Now comes the best part — actually going somewhere incredible and using it.
When most people picture a dive trip, they imagine warm blue water, coral reefs, wrecks, sharks, turtles, and maybe a cold drink by the pool afterward. What they don’t always think about is who they’re going with.
Sure, you can book a flight, find a resort, reserve some dives, and piece the whole thing together yourself. But traveling with your local dive shop turns a dive vacation into something completely different.
And contrary to what you might think, shop trips aren’t just for hardcore divers traveling alone. They can be fantastic vacations for single divers, couples, families, and even people who have absolutely no interest in putting on a scuba tank.
You Already Have a Dive Buddy — Actually, You Have a Whole Group
One of the biggest concerns we hear from single divers is simple:
"I don't have anyone to go with."
That's exactly where a shop trip shines.
You don't need to convince a friend to get certified or hope you get paired with a random buddy when you arrive. You're traveling with a group of divers from your own community, usually including people you've already met at the shop, in classes, at the pool, or at local dives.
And if you don't know anyone when the trip starts, there's a pretty good chance you will by the time it's over.
Dive trips have a funny way of turning strangers into friends. A week of boat rides, great dives, dinners, questionable jokes and telling the same dive story three different ways tends to do that.

Maybe you both dive. Great.
A shop trip gives you a built-in group of people to dive and socialize with, while still leaving plenty of time to enjoy the destination together.
But what if only one of you dives?
That's actually more common than you might think.
One person can spend the morning diving while the other sleeps in, hits the beach, goes shopping, books a spa day, explores the island, reads by the pool or does absolutely nothing — which is a perfectly respectable vacation activity.
Then you meet back up afterward and enjoy the rest of the day together.
Nobody has to spend the entire vacation doing something they aren't interested in just because their partner loves scuba diving.
Families Can Make It a Real Vacation
Dive travel can also work surprisingly well for families.
Maybe Mom and Dad dive and the kids don't. Maybe one parent dives with an older certified child while everyone else stays topside. Maybe you've got several certified divers in the family with completely different experience levels.
That's one of the advantages of traveling as part of a larger group.
You're not building the entire vacation around one person's diving schedule.
Many of the destinations we visit have plenty to do outside of scuba: snorkeling, beaches, fishing, kayaking, hiking, sightseeing, restaurants, pools and excursions.
Everyone gets a vacation.
The divers just happen to disappear underwater occasionally.
Non-Divers Are Absolutely Welcome
This one is worth emphasizing:
You do not have to be a diver to come on many of our trips.
We love scuba diving. Obviously.
But we're also going to some pretty incredible places.
If your spouse, significant other, friend or family member doesn't dive, that doesn't mean they have to stay home.
In fact, bringing a non-diver can sometimes make the trip better. While you're underwater looking at a reef, they're discovering everything happening above the surface — and suddenly your group has twice as many stories at dinner.
And who knows?
After spending a week surrounded by divers having an amazing time, they might finally decide to give that Try Scuba thing a shot.
No pressure, of course.
Well... maybe 1 ATA of pressure.
Somebody Else Has Already Done the Homework
This might be the most underrated part of traveling with a dive shop.
Dive travel has a lot of moving pieces.
Flights. Transfers. Resorts. Dive operators. Marine park fees. Gear. Baggage allowances. Nitrox. Rental equipment. Boat schedules. Entry requirements. What to pack. What not to pack.
And inevitably:
"Wait... am I supposed to bring DIN or yoke?"
When you travel with your local shop, you're traveling with people who understand dive travel and have already worked through many of those details.
Instead of starting from scratch, you've got someone you can actually call, email or walk into the shop and talk to.
That's especially valuable if this is your first international dive trip.
There's Help When Something Doesn't Go According to Plan
Travel is travel.
Flights get delayed. Bags occasionally decide they'd rather vacation somewhere else. Gear breaks. People forget things. Boats change schedules. Weather happens.
Having experienced divers and trip leaders traveling with you doesn't magically prevent those things.
It does mean you're not necessarily figuring them out alone.
Forgot a piece of equipment?
There's a decent chance someone in the group has a spare.
Computer acting weird?
You've probably got several experienced divers standing nearby.
Not sure you're comfortable with a particular dive?

A good shop trip isn't about pushing everyone into doing the exact same thing. It's about helping everyone have a safe, enjoyable trip appropriate for their experience and comfort level.
It's Also a Great Way to Become a Better Diver
There's another benefit that sneaks up on people.
You usually come home a better diver.
Spend a week around experienced divers and instructors and you're going to pick things up. You see different equipment configurations. You talk about dives. You watch how other people handle buoyancy, currents, entries, exits and dive planning.
And depending on the trip, there may also be opportunities to complete additional training while you're there.
There's something pretty great about earning a new certification somewhere you'd actually want to dive anyway.
The Diving Is Only Half the Trip
Ask someone about a great dive vacation five years later and they'll certainly remember the sharks, wrecks, reefs and turtles.
But they'll probably also remember dinner with the group.
The ridiculous thing somebody said on the boat.
The person who forgot their swimsuit.
The post-dive beers.
The inside jokes that somehow survived all the way back to Kansas City.
That's what makes traveling with a local dive shop different.
You're not just booking dives.
You're traveling with a community.
